It is peak citrus season so it is time for my favorite nostalgic grapefruit cocktail, the Greyhound.
I first discovered them in Oakland at a terrific bar named Café Von Cleef. It was owned by a Dutch man who made the most delicious grapefruit based drinks. When you sat at the bar, there were halves of grapefruits within close range to be freshly squeezed and sliced for immediate consumption. At the time, I was working in downtown Oakland and it was a fun place to meet a friend for an outdoor drink on a warm evening. On colder evenings, you could find a table in the small, narrow bar. Occasionally there would be a jazz band playing.
It also reminds me of when I was first getting to know Brian. I was going to the nearby Fox Theater for a concert with friends. I asked him if he wanted to meet us before for a Greyhound. Everyone adored him like I did. Cheers.
